ETIAS 2026 What UK Travellers Must Know Before Going to France

Important: Are you a UK resident on a non-British passport?

ETIAS does not apply only to British passport holders. It applies to visa-exempt travellers, including British citizens and nationals of other visa-free countries. If you are a UK resident travelling on a passport from a country that requires a Schengen visa — such as India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Bangladesh, or the Philippines — you will need a France Schengen Visa. If you are travelling on another visa-exempt passport, you may need ETIAS instead of a visa once ETIAS goes live. The rule depends on the passport you travel with, not the fact that you live in the UK

Why You Are Reading This — and Why It Matters Right Now

If you are planning a trip to Paris, the French Riviera, Bordeaux wine country, or anywhere else in France, there is a new pre-travel requirement heading your way in 2026. It is called ETIAS — the European Travel Information and Authorisation System — and for millions of UK travellers, it will change how you prepare for your France holiday.

The good news: it is simple, inexpensive, and done entirely online. The confusing part: there is widespread misunderstanding about who it applies to — particularly in households where family members hold different passports.

This guide cuts through the noise. Whether you hold a British passport, are a UK resident on a foreign passport, or are a family with mixed nationalities, you will know exactly what you need to do by the end of this page.

What this guide covers:

What ETIAS is and how it works Who needs ETIAS — and who does NOT (UK residents on foreign passports) How to apply, costs, and processing times The full EES + ETIAS timeline to full enforcement The ETIAS vs France Schengen Visa distinction — the most important section for UK residents Answers to the most-asked questions from UK travellers

What Is ETIAS?

ETIAS stands for the European Travel Information and Authorisation System. It is a pre-travel electronic authorisation — not a visa — introduced by the European Union to screen visitors from visa-exempt countries before they arrive at the EU border.

The simplest way to understand it: ETIAS works almost identically to the American ESTA system. If you have ever visited the United States, you will already be familiar with the process. You apply online before you travel, receive a digital approval linked to your passport, and present your passport at the border. The authorisation is checked electronically — no separate document, sticker, or stamp is needed.

ETIAS was created as part of a broader post-Brexit overhaul of how the EU manages travel across its external borders. The UK left the EU’s freedom of movement area on 31 December 2020. British passport holders have since been treated as third-country nationals for travel purposes — meaning they are now subject to the same screening rules as travellers from the United States, Canada, Australia, and other visa-exempt countries.

Why has the EU introduced ETIAS?

  • To screen visitors against EU, Europol, and Interpol security databases before they reach a border crossing.
  • To gather advance information about travellers entering the Schengen Zone from visa-exempt countries.
  • To reduce pressure on border agents by pre-approving the vast majority of travellers digitally.
  • To create a more consistent pre-travel screening system across 30 European countries that will require ETIAS.
Is ETIAS a visa?

No. ETIAS is not a visa and it does not replace a visa. It is a travel authorisation for visitors from countries that are normally visa-exempt.   If you are from a country that already requires a Schengen visa — such as India, Pakistan, Nigeria, China, or most of Asia, Africa, and the Middle East — ETIAS does not apply to you. You will continue to need a France Schengen Visa regardless of where you live.

What about the EES — is that the same thing?

No. ETIAS and EES are two separate systems that work together as part of the EU’s Smart Borders programme. Here is the difference:

  • EES (Entry/Exit System): Launched October 2025. This is the biometric border system — it digitally records fingerprints and facial scans of non-EU travellers each time they enter or exit the Schengen Zone. It replaces manual passport stamping. EES is being gradually introduced at major border points, including Eurostar and Eurotunnel terminals.
  • ETIAS: Coming Q4 2026. This is the pre-travel digital approval system — you complete it at home, in advance, before booking your trip. It is the online screening layer that sits on top of EES.

In simple terms: EES is the physical check at the border. ETIAS is the digital pre-clearance before you even leave the UK.

Scam warning — do not apply for ETIAS yet

The ETIAS portal is not yet live. Any website currently offering to process your ETIAS application is a scam. The only legitimate place to apply for ETIAS, once it opens, will be the official EU portal: travel-europe.europa.eu/etias   The European Commission has warned travellers about fraudulent websites already collecting money and personal data. Do not use any third-party ETIAS application service.

Who Needs ETIAS — and Who Does Not

Who Needs ETIAS — and Who Does Not

This is the section most UK residents search for, and where the most confusion exists. The answer depends entirely on which passport you hold — not where you live.

British passport holders — you WILL need ETIAS

If you hold a British (UK) passport, you will need ETIAS to visit France and all other Schengen countries for short stays from Q4 2026. This covers:

  • Tourism and holidays
  • Business trips and conferences
  • Visiting family or friends
  • Short cultural or education visits
  • ETIAS may be needed if your journey involves entering France/Schengen. It is not required for staying only in the international transit area

ETIAS covers short stays only — normally up to 90 days in any 180-day period in the European countries requiring ETIAS, provided you continue to meet all other entry conditions.

UK residents on non-British passports — you need a France Schengen Visa

UK residents on non-British passports — check whether your passport is visa-exempt or visa-required
If you live in the UK but hold a non-British passport, the rule depends on your passport nationality. If your passport is from a country that requires a Schengen visa for France, ETIAS does not apply and you will need a France Schengen Visa. If your passport is from a country that is visa-exempt, you may need ETIAS once it becomes operational. UK residence alone does not decide this — your travel document nationality does.

You need a France Schengen Visa. This has been the case since before ETIAS was introduced, and it does not change when ETIAS launches. The France Schengen Visa gives you the right to enter France for short stays (maximum 90 days in a 180-day period). For longer stays, you need a France long-stay national visa.

Dual nationality — which passport should you use?

If you hold both a British passport and an EU or EEA passport, you should travel on your EU/EEA passport. Holders of an EU passport remain entitled to full freedom of movement in Schengen countries — no ETIAS required, no visa required, and no 90-day time limit.

Who is exempt from ETIAS?

  • EU, EEA (Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein), and Swiss nationals
  • Irish passport holders (Ireland is not in Schengen but has a separate agreement)
  • UK nationals with settled status under the EU Withdrawal Agreement (those living in an EU country before 31 December 2020, with valid EU residency documentation)
  • Holders of valid Schengen long-stay visas (Type D) or EU/Schengen residency permits
  • Travellers under the age of 18 (free ETIAS, but must still apply)
  • Travellers over the age of 70 (free ETIAS, but must still apply)

Still Waiting for Your France Visa Slot?

UK travellers are securing appointments faster than you think. Don’t miss your France trip because of delayed booking.

Mixed-nationality families — what you need to know

Many UK households include partners or family members holding different passports. For example, a British father and an Indian mother travelling together to France for a family holiday will have different requirements:

  • British father: Needs ETIAS (from Q4 2026)
  • Indian mother (UK resident): Needs a France Schengen Visa — she should apply now, before the holiday
  • Children with British passports: Need ETIAS (free, but must apply)
  • Children with Indian passports: Need a France Schengen Visa

Planning both requirements in parallel is strongly advised. France Schengen Visa processing takes 10–15 working days, plus a TLS appointment. Start early.

ETIAS for France — What Changes at the Border

ETIAS applies to all entry points into France — whether you are flying into Charles de Gaulle or Orly, arriving via Eurostar at Gare du Nord, driving through the Channel Tunnel, or arriving by ferry. There are no exemptions based on mode of transport.

At Eurostar and the Channel Tunnel

The EU’s new border systems affect travel by air, sea, and land. EES has been rolling out gradually since 12 October 2025 at the external borders of participating European countries. ETIAS is expected to start in the last quarter of 2026. Once ETIAS is in force, carriers on some routes will need to verify travel authorisation before boarding. For train travel, the official ETIAS guidance says train operators will not have an obligation to verify ETIAS in the same way, but border authorities can still check your entry conditions at the border.

What ETIAS does NOT do

  • ETIAS does not guarantee entry into France. Final admission is still decided by the border authorities.
  • ETIAS does not let you stay beyond the normal short-stay limit.
  • ETIAS does not give you the right to work, live, or remain in France long-term.
  • ETIAS does not replace a France long-stay visa or residence process for stays over 90 days or other long-term purposes

What to carry at the French border

Once ETIAS is approved, it is stored electronically and linked to your passport number. You do not need to print or carry any document — the border agent scans your passport and the ETIAS record appears on their system.

However, border agents in France — and particularly at Eurostar checks — may still ask for supporting documentation, including:

  • Return or onward travel tickets confirming you plan to leave within 90 days
  • Hotel or accommodation booking confirmations
  • Travel insurance documentation
  • Bank statements or evidence of sufficient funds for your stay
  • Contact details of anyone you are visiting in France
ETIAS does not remove the need for supporting documents

Having ETIAS authorisation does not mean you can turn up at the French border without evidence of your travel plans. French border officers conduct random checks and may ask for proof of accommodation, return travel, funds, and the purpose of your visit — just as they do today with Schengen visa holders.   It is good practice to carry digital copies of your hotel booking, return ticket, travel insurance, and any relevant travel itinerary.

How to Apply for ETIAS — Step by Step

ETIAS applications will open in Q4 2026 via the official EU portal. The process is entirely online and takes approximately 10 minutes for most applicants. Here is exactly how it will work:

Step 1Go to the official EU ETIAS portalVisit travel-europe.europa.eu/etias (opening Q4 2026). Never use third-party sites — scam sites already exist posing as ETIAS services.
Step 2Complete the online formFill in personal details, passport information, travel history, and answer security questions. Takes approximately 10 minutes.
Step 3Pay the €20 feePay by credit or debit card. Free for applicants under 18 and over 70.
Step 4Wait for authorisationMost ETIAS applications are expected to be processed within minutes, but some may take up to 30 days. For that reason, travellers should apply well in advance and not leave it until the last minute.
Step 5Travel with confidenceETIAS is stored electronically and linked to your passport. No printed document is needed — the border agent scans your passport and your ETIAS appears instantly.

What information will you need?

  • Valid British passport — must not have been issued more than 10 years ago, even if still technically valid. Check your issue date before you travel.
  • A working email address — your ETIAS approval notification will be sent here.
  • A credit or debit card to pay the €20 fee.
  • Basic personal information: full name, date of birth, nationality, address.
  • Travel history: countries visited in the last 10 years (approximate is acceptable).
  • Background questions: criminal record, health conditions (specifically tuberculosis), past deportation or refusal of entry from any country.
Check your passport before you apply

Your passport must meet the normal Schengen passport rules: it should have a date of issue less than 10 years before arrival and an expiry date at least 3 months after the date you plan to leave the Schengen area.

The Full ETIAS & EES Timeline — From Now Until Full Enforcement

ETIAS has been delayed multiple times since it was first announced in 2016 — originally scheduled for 2020, then pushed to 2022, 2023, 2024, and most recently 2025. It is now expected in Q4 2026. Dates below reflect current official guidance and may shift.

Oct 2025EES (Entry/Exit System) launches at UK–France border crossings including Eurostar (St Pancras) and Eurotunnel (Folkestone). Biometric scanning at borders begins.
Apr 2026EES fully operational across all Schengen entry points. UK travellers will have fingerprints and photos recorded on first entry.
Q4 2026 (est.)ETIAS applications open. Transitional period begins — British passport holders can still enter France without ETIAS during this phase, but are encouraged to apply early.
~Apr 2027ETIAS becomes mandatory for most travellers. British citizens attempting entry without ETIAS may be refused boarding by airlines and refused entry at land borders.
~Oct 2027Full enforcement. No ETIAS = no entry to France or any Schengen country. No exceptions outside of EU residency and long-stay visa holders.

Important note on delays: Given ETIAS’s history of postponements, it is possible the Q4 2026 launch shifts again. This guide will be updated as official announcements are made. Bookmark this page or follow francevisa.org.uk for the latest information.

ETIAS vs France Schengen Visa: The Key Distinction for UK Residents

This is the most important section of this guide for many readers — particularly UK residents who were born outside the UK or who are travelling with family members holding non-British passports.

The single most important rule

Your passport nationality determines what you need — not where you live

ETIAS is for people whose passport is from a visa-exempt country (like the UK). If your passport is from a country that requires a Schengen visa (like India, Pakistan, or Nigeria), you need a visa — full stop. Living in the UK does not change this.

There is no single rule for all non-British passport holders resident in the UK. Some will need a France Schengen Visa, while others travelling on visa-exempt passports may need ETIAS once it becomes operational.

Quick decision guide: Do you need ETIAS or a France Visa?

  • I hold a British passport → You need ETIAS. Apply at travel-europe.europa.eu/etias from Q4 2026.
  • I hold an Indian / Pakistani / Nigerian / other visa-required passport and live in the UK → You need a France Schengen Visa. Apply now at francevisa.org.uk.
  • I hold an EU / EEA / Swiss passport → You need nothing. Freedom of movement applies.
  • I hold an Irish passport → You need nothing for France.
  • I hold a dual British + EU passport → Travel on your EU passport. No ETIAS needed.
  • I want to stay in France for more than 90 days → Neither ETIAS nor a tourist visa will cover you. You need a France long-stay national visa (Type D).

Processing times compared

  • ETIAS: most applications are expected to be processed within minutes, but some may take up to 30 days.
  • France Schengen Visa: Once applications are transferred to the French Consulate in London, they are generally processed within 2 to 15 working days, but applicants are strongly advised to allow at least 20 working days for delays.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply for ETIAS right now?

No. The ETIAS portal is not yet open. It is expected to open in Q4 2026. Any website currently offering ETIAS applications is fraudulent. The only legitimate portal will be travel-europe.europa.eu/etias — which is not live yet. Do not submit personal data or payment to any ETIAS service currently operating online.

How much does ETIAS cost?

The ETIAS application fee is €20 for applicants aged 18 to 70. Applicants under 18 and over 70 are exempt from the fee but must still apply and obtain authorisation. The fee was updated in July 2025 from the originally planned €7 to €20.

How long is ETIAS valid for?

ETIAS is valid for 3 years from the date of approval, or until your passport expires — whichever comes first. You can make multiple trips to France and the broader Schengen Zone during those 3 years without reapplying, as long as you do not exceed 90 days in any 180-day period.

Does ETIAS let me work or live in France?

No. ETIAS is for short-term visits only (maximum 90 days in 180). It does not give you the right to work, study, or reside in France. If you want to live or work in France long-term, you will need to apply for a France long-stay national visa (Type D) through the French consular process.

Does ETIAS apply to Eurostar and the Channel Tunnel?

Yes. ETIAS will be required for all entry points into France once mandatory — including Eurostar at St Pancras, Eurotunnel at Folkestone, ferry crossings, and flights. Airlines and train operators will be required to check ETIAS status before allowing boarding. This means you could be prevented from boarding your Eurostar in London if you do not hold a valid ETIAS.

What if my ETIAS application is refused?

If your ETIAS application is refused, you will receive a written reason and can submit a new application or appeal the decision. If refused a second time, you will need to apply for a standard Schengen visa through the official French consular process.

I am an Indian national living in the UK — does ETIAS apply to me?

No. ETIAS is only available to nationals of visa-exempt countries. Indian nationals require a Schengen visa to enter France regardless of whether they live in the UK. You should apply for a France Schengen Visa through francevisa.org.uk. Our team handles your TLS appointment booking and document guidance to give your application the best chance of approval.

My passport expires in 6 months — can I still apply for ETIAS?

You can apply for ETIAS as long as your passport is valid for the duration of your intended stay. However, Schengen entry rules require your passport to be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from France. If your passport is due to expire soon, renew it before applying for ETIAS — and remember that a new passport means a new ETIAS application

Is ETIAS the same for all Schengen countries?

Yes. ETIAS is a single authorisation that covers all 29 Schengen member states, including France, Germany, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Greece, Portugal, and all others. You do not need a separate ETIAS for each country — one application covers your entire Schengen travel during the validity period.
